Max Murphy Uses Final Burst To Overtake Sam Hall For 4A Title By Mary Albl of DyeStat Max Murphy used a strong final surge on the Lakeside Golf Course to win the 4A Iowa State High School Cross Country title on Saturday in Fort Dodge. The Pleasant Valley senior ran down Dowling Catholic's Sam Hall and passed him in the final 10 meters to win the 5,000-meter race in 15 minutes, 29.3 seconds. Hall was second in 15:29.5. Dowling Catholic repeated as 4A team champs with 87 points. Pleasant Valley was second with 96 points. Camille Jackson of Ames produced the fastest time of the day on her way to winning the 4A title in 17:23.9. Johnston placed three runners in the top 10 to score 56 points and win the championship. It was a tight battle for the 3A boys team title as Dallas Center-Grimes edged out Clear Creek-Amana by one point, 109-110. Individually, Adel-Desoto-Minburn's Nate Mueller won the title 15:45.7. The Ballard girls went 2-3 and placed five in the top 32 to score 57 points and win the 3A crown. Center Point (Urbana) senior Adrianna Katcher won the race in 18:29.4. The Tipton boys narrowly defended their 2A title, scoring 78 points to beat out Des Moines Christian (82 points). Camanche junior Dylan Darsidan won in 16:02. Like the boys, the race for the 2A team title came down to the wire. Mid-Prairie scored 61 points to edge out Williamsburg (62 points) to claim the program's third straight championship. Senior Marie Hostetler led the way for Mid-Prairie, clocking 17:58.2 to win her third consecutive title. The Madrid boys easily defended their 1A title as four runners placed in the top 20. Nodaway Valley senior Joshua Baudler won the race in 16:11. The Logan-Magnolia girls were also able to defend their 1A title, scoring 112 points. Individually, junior Peyton Pogge of Tri-Center (Neola), won the race in 18:45.4.
