Yanek, Schweizer claim Class 4A titles
McKenzie Yanek of Pleasant Valley won the Class 4A girls title in Fort Dodge for the second time in three years and dominated the race with 17:55. It was a welcome result for Yanek, who won in 2013 but missed qualifying for the 2014 state meet because of illness. Yanek was fifth in the New Balance Nationals Outdoor 5,000 meters last June but has sometimes resided in the shadow of Iowa’s standout prep, Stephanie Jenks. But Jenks isn’t eligible to compete in high school cross country in Iowa. Yanek, who has committed to Alabama, becomes the new course record holder as well. This was the first year in which Iowa girls ran 5,000 meters, the same distance as the boys. Urbandale won the 4A girls team title, the first in school history, with 64 points. In the Class 4A boys race, senior Ryan Schweizer ran 15:45.3 for the win after placing second in 2014. He led Dowling Catholic to the team win with 69 points. Cedar Falls was second with 79. In Class 3A, Logan Murray of Mount Pleasant got the win but Mount Vernon-Lisbon got the big trophy. In 2A, C.J. May of Aplington-Parkersburg won the race in 15:55. Garner-Hayfield/Ventura won the team title. In 1A, Andrew Stumbo of Ogden won and Nodaway Valley earned team laurels. Julie Schumacher of Assumption won the 3A girls race and led her team to the top of the podium. Paige Holub defended her 2A title as Cascade won the team championship. And in 1A, Alyssa Williams of Durant won the state’s first 5,000-meter final. Central of Elkader won the small-school team title. |
