IOWA STATE MEET

Dowling Catholic Pulls Off Upset, Takes Down Sioux City North

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Dowling Catholic's boys landed on the right day with the right effort and beat pre-meet favorite Sioux City North 56-62 on Saturday at Fort Dodge.

Led by overall winner Jackson Heidesch, who ran 15:24.3 to win the Class 4A race, Dowling Catholic turned the tables on the North Stars, who won the championship last year. North beat Dowling Catholic for the Roy Griak Invitational title in September (158-165) and won another matchup with the Maroons at the Fort Dodge Invitational on Oct. 7.

Both teams put three in the top 10. Heidesch was joined by Will Ryan, who was seventh, and Tyler Schweizer, who was 10th. North countered with its powerful trio up front -- Gabe Nash (third), Will Lohr (fifth) and Natnael Kifle (eighth).

Jack Flori was a difference-maker for Dowling, finishing 27th overall as the team's fifth. North's fifth was 40th. In the team scoring it was a 10-point swing.

The Dubuque Hempstead girls survived a 1-2 finish from West Des Moines duo Addison Dorenkamp (17:55.1) and Kamryn Ensley (18:14.8) to win the girls 4A title.

DH was led by Keelee Leitzen and Julia Gehl, who finished fifth and sixth. The team had additional scoring advantages at Nos. 3 and 4, with Brooke O'Brien (23rd) and Evie Henneberry (30th).

Paityn Noe of Ballard moved up a spot to claim the 3A state title. Her former training partner and last year's champion, Shewaye Johnson, moved to Texas. Noe, a junior, ran 18:12.7 and won by 54 seconds.

Solon snapped Ballard's two-year run by winning the team title with 77 points.

The Dallas Center-Grimes boys won for the third straight year, claiming the 3A title with 60 points. Aidan Ramsey celebrated an individual title as well as the team win, running 15:36.0.

Sophomore Danielle Hostetler of Mid-Prairie Wellman won her second consecutive 2A title in 18:27.2. She also led her team to a championship with 50 points. Teammate Sydney Yoder was seventh.

The Tipton boys won the 2A title with 60 points. Aaron Fynaardt from Des Moines Christian ran 15:56.5 to win the race.

Calamus-Wheatland freshman Noelle Steines made a splash in the 1A girls race, winning in 18:20.9. South Winneshiek won the team title.

Earlham got a 1-2 finish from Jayden Dickson and Dominic Braet, but it was ACGC that brought the "TNT" and won the team title with 75 points. Earlham was third.
