Johnston girls, Dowling Catholic boys win 4A titles

Johnston were big winners in Class 4A. The Johnston girls dominated the team title, scoring 26 points and placing their five scoring runners in the top 14. Additionally, Johnston's Patrick Bose, a senior, won the boys race in 15:37.2.

The girls race was won by junior Bailey Nock of Iowa City West. Her victory in 18:06.9 improved on her previous seventh and third place finishes.

In the boys team race, Dowling Catholic pulled out a two-point victory over Pleasant Valley, 100-102, to repeat as Class 4A champions.

In Class 3A, Decorah Senior won their fourth girls team title in five years with a close 102-106 win over Pella. Freshman Adrianna Katcher of Center Point Urbana ran 18:27.7 for the win.

In the boys race, Marion juniors, Jeremy Fopma and Myles Bach, went 1-2 in16:02.8 and 16:14.5, respectively, but that was not enough to secure Marion a place on the podium. Instead, Mount Vernon/Lisbon repeated as state champions, earning a two-point victory over Grinnell, 86-88.

Mid-Prairie had a good day for both boys and girls in Class 2A. Anna and Marie Hostetler, a junior and a freshamn, went 1-2 in the girls race. Anna ran 17:57.7 for the win and Marie finished in 18:15.3. The Mid-Prairie boys won the team title with 98 points over Unity Christian.

Senior Andrew Stumbo, from Ogden, ran 15:53.6 to win the 2A title after winning the 1A title last year. In the girls team race, Monticello Senior won their second title in three years, scoring 93 points.

In Class 1A, Central Community girls and Nodaway Valley boys repeated as state champions, scoring 69 and 36 points respectively. Freshman Kate Crawford of Guthrie Center earned a narrow victory in 19:38.7 in the girls race, while junior Riley Bauer of North Union ran 16:09.7 for the win in the boys race.
