IHSAA Iowa State Meet: Dowling Catholic boys rule, but girls’ streak comes to an end

HIGHLIGHTS

Class 4A BOYS: US#7/HL#1 Dowling Catholic boys defended their 2011 title with three in the top 10 and scoring 60 points, well ahead of Pleasant Valley’s 112 and Linn-Mar’s 120. DC also had the individual champ in senior Jason Thomas, who tied the all-time meet record from 2011 with his 15:02. Dubuque sr Dylan Eigenberger edged Pleasant Valley sr Caleb Drake for 2nd as both clocked 15:07. WDM Valley sr Ben Anderson was unable to defend his title and finished 7th in 15:19 after being in the lead at 2M.

Class 4A GIRLSPleasant Valley put three in the top seven and won by a stunning margin with 49 points. Linn-Mar was second with 93 and Johnston won a tough battle for 3rd with 155. After winning five years in a row, HL#5 Dowling Catholic was 5th. Linn-Mar frosh Stephanie Jenksscorched the course in 13:42, with splits of 5:16 and 10:58, for the best time of the day. Iowa City West jr Ashlynn Yokom was 2nd in 14:00 and Dowling Catholic jr Karissa Schweizer edged Pleasant Valley frosh McKenzie Yanek for 3rd, 14:08-14:09.

Class 3A BOYSDecorah netted a sweep of 3A: The boys scored 62, with four seniors in the top 12, and finished 12 points up on Pella with Charles City a distant third. It was their record 15th title, but first since 1992. Boone had a 1-2 boys finish with juniors Chandler Austin (15:24.26) andAlbert Meier (15:35.20).

Class 3A GIRLS: The Decorah girls had a 10-second, 1-5 split, and scored 63 to take MOC-Floyd Valley by 22 – with Davenport Assumption just another eight points back. Decorah’s girls last won in 2007; they broke a 3-year Dubuque Wahlert streak. Waverly-Shell Rock sr Anna Holdimanrouted the field with her 13:51, second best of the meet, and nearly 40 seconds ahead of Solon srLauren Benzing (the 2A champ last year). Defending champ Madison Waymire was 4th. Holdiman also won as a soph in 2010.

Class 2A BOYS: Defending champ Monticello crushed the field with 52 points, 80 ahead ofAlleman North Polk, which scored 132 to Gilbert’s 134. Spirit Lake sr Will Norris came from five seconds down at 2M to win with 15:25, 11 seconds up on Gilbert soph Thomas Pollard.

Class 2A GIRLSOrange City Unity Christian prevailed with 97 points, followed by Goose Lake Northeast 124, Western Dubuque Cascade 158, and Monticello 160. Danville/New London srCassandra Stuflick won at 14:54, followed by Western Dubuque Cascade sr Mariah Kauder15:09. Defending champ Sadie Timms was 15th.

Class 1A: Defending champ Griswold soph Rebekah Topham ran to a 14:05 and won buy 10 seconds over Sibley-Ocheyedan jr Leah Seivert. Topham led Griswold to its first title as their 86 points were 16 better than Pekin, which had won three of the last four years. Senior Josh Sindelarran 16:15 to win and pace the defending champ Council Bluffs St. Albert boys to a 68-point total, 16 up on Denver. Dike-New Hartford frosh John Crew was 2nd individually with 16:26.
